Modeling from Point Clouds

Accurate models can be created from the point cloud by using similar techniques to measuring. The Visual Explorer tool can give the user a feeling for the shape of the building in the absence of aerial photography. Here we see that the roof is slightly peaked and that there are other small structures on the roof.

If the user has access to aerial photography we see that is the case.

The roof is digitized around the roof boundary and projected down to ground level.

The orthogonal shape tool is used and median point snap setting is picked.

The roof is digitized at all four corners with snap off (shift ctrl to disable AccuSnap) to ensure a planar surface.

The roof shape is projected down to the ground surface in another view.

To raise the centerline of the roof to the level of the peak, the Draw on Solid tool is selected, Smart Snap set to a small radius and highest point. The peak line is drawn on the solid at the highest point.

The Modify Solid Entity tool is used to pull the peak line up to the highest point on the centerline.
